ok movie. Tried to be Michael Bay, but neither had the money nor the talent behind the camera (god, I use the words Michael Bay and talent in one sentence... ).
Secret behind it all was thankfully not revealed in the trailer. So you may hate or like the reason for the mayhem. I liked it, though it ended to easily.

You have to admire Maher for taking on such a controversial topic and being brave enough to ask the inconvenient question most people (including myself for much of my life) avoid, either about religion or any other topic. Even though you obviously know where he personally stands, he puts the major religions equally under the microscope and does not discriminate. And in the process, the film is very entertaining! I don't remember the last time I laughed that much from a documentary or film. |

A very interesting premise, some of the things he talked about were good (state and religion, history of religion in the Mediterranean, etc) but I just felt that sometimes Bill Maher came off as being rude to the people he was talking to.
Oh and being a Christian I can appreciate he spent so much time on it but there were alot of religions that weren't even mentioned. |

The light-hearted critique of religious folly in the first 90 minutes of the film did not at all prepare me for its intensely powerful finale. The audience, laughing and applauding through much of the film, was morbidly silent as the screen went to black and the credits rolled.
Maher spends much of the film pointing out the well-documented (and for those of us who are atheist, somewhat familiar) inconsistencies surrounding the popular "salvation" religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. He pokes fun at Mormons, Scientologists, and Jews for Jesus, too. Many of these scenes are hilarious; others are outright sad. But it's in the final few minutes that Maher drives home his main points.
First, Maher says, religious certainty is dangerous, sometimes fatal, and should be tempered with a healthy dose of doubt. Unbridled faith, he argues, is not a virtue.
His second, and most moving, point is that while millions of people may simply believe in the destruction of Earth foretold in the scripture, man is now quite capable of causing such destruction ourselves, without assistance from vengeful sky gods. With increasing tensions among religious communities in the middle east and around the world, and the proliferation of nuclear weapons, Maher warns that it's religiously guided minds, more than any god, that may ultimately effect the destruction of mankind. |

I'm watching the movie and thinking this is a pretty good sci-fi techno thriller, and in the last two minutes the purpose of the movie was revealed. It's an action pack anti-Patriot Act movie. Can't remember the exact words, but it was to the effect of 'we have to make sure that while protecting ourselves we don't violate our civil liberties'. Thanks leftest ACLU hollywooders. |

This was great and full of laughs and insights on the state of religion today. I expected it to be funny from the previews I had seen and I wasn't disappointed. But it got a little preachy (ironically) at the end. It felt as if Maher had a definite agenda there (and I think he does, and is up front about it too). I wish he could have left it on a lighter note, keeping in tune with the rest of the documentary. |

Bill Maher was hilarious, the questions that he asked and the responses he gave to the religulous leaders and supporters were fantastic. It was very one sided in Larry Charles and Bill Maher's view of certain religions, and the questions they asked were often ridiculous, but ultimately this was a hilarious take on religion and the crazies that run the world with it. Definitely alot better to think of it as a comedy than as a documentary. |

This is a film adaptation of one of my favorite books of all time (the only one I've had signed by the author), so my expectations were at least somewhat high yet ready to forgive. While I was astonished to see what material they kept from the repulsive, pornographically shocking novel, the film as a whole seemed to become a mostly finished jigsaw puzzle missing some crucial pieces. The most dissatisfying element, I'm sorry to report, is the choice to go with the mass-appealing Hollywood happy ending - for instance, that rock collection of best friend Denny's plays more of a role in Victor's life than can be expected, and the film stubbornly has no resolution for the peculiar hobby. Rockwell handles his fan-loved role with care and brains, and Huston, despite looking too old for the flashbacks, brings a professionalism that Chuck Palahniuk's stories deserve. The staged rape scene is hilarious, and the big twist-revealing scene (I'll call it that) brings humor and sadness simultaneously. If the future is perfect enough, this will be the weakest entry in the Palahniuk adaptations collection, but for now, it's not too bad... Too naughty? Perhaps... but not too bad. |

With a joyful spirit, I can confidently report that the newest Christian-fueled, maritally-concious cinematic experience is a nice, even if not all together perfect, success.
Three years ago, "Facing the Giants" proved to be cliche, campy and hideously forced. In other words, it was right on track with typical 'inspirational football movies' (the one genre I loathe to the core of myself). Naturally, I was hesitant to see this newest effort, but the relational implications was a strong bet.
Now about the film:
It isn't pefect and much of the acting is volunteer-oriented, a detail any critic must consider before annihilating the execution of lines. For many in the cast, it was their first and last time in front of the camera. They were making a film for God's glory, not filmic accreditation.
So, that particular notion aside, this movie speaks very loudly about, I'd say, 60% of marriages in America today. Here, objectivity is key. For instance, I am not a married man, but am intimately involved with the woman I intend to marry. For me, then, it was the allegorical stories told that spoke loudest to my relationship.
(example: Salt and pepper are always seen together. Both are completely different compositionally and sometimes used for different things. Still, they go together and, in a sense, balance each other out. Now, if you were to glue two S&P shakers together, tearing them apart may be detrimental. "Don't pull them apart, or you'll risk breaking either or both.")
That analogy alone was worth my $7.50.
"Fireproof" is a film that requires from its audience, a consideration of the greater good. It exists to bring audiences, specifically couples, together in Christ, hopefully proving that without His guidance and grace, we are loving in vain.
There is a song that plays during the closing credits that contains a wonderful verse: "Love will come to save us / If we'll only call / He will ask nothing from us / But demand that we give our all."
That is love, true love. |

I like Shia's sincerity and, in this movie, even character development as he struggles to define himself in the shadow of an over-the-top accoplished brother and a stereotypical "hard to please" father.
This was a Hal 2001 meets Telephone Booth meets Jason Bourne meets Transformers (I had to throw that in) movie that was just intense enough for me and not too intense for my spouse.
It was good at raising some important political questions without being too preachy. Could have been better, but we did see it at the main-release theater and weren't disappointed on our date night.
In terms of the message, its helpful to remember that our broken world can't be fixed by any man-made solution, and morality and our enemy's humanity is central to how we conduct ourselves as Americans in the world.
Besides all that, the movie was well done with some amazing action sequences, and a several chase and "blow up" scenes that beat anything in Transformers. |

This movie moved me to tears. I was so touched to see a movie that delves so deeply into issues people face today. Thank God for the Kendrick brothers and their boldness to make movies glorifying to our Lord and Savior. This film will leave no one untouched in spite of condescending reviews on Rotten Tomatoes that say, "This is not Oscar-worthy material." The Kendrick brothers say, "We know!...This is truly a loaves and fishes film." Fireproof won't be winning any Oscars, but it certainly will inspire couples in struggling marriages to work to save their relationships, and it also very well could lead people to Christ. I believe that will make the Kendrick brothers happier than any amounts of gold statues ever could. It'll make our Savior happier too. |
