Paul Walker on Why He Returned For ‘Fast and Furious:’ ‘Money,’ Actor Says. |

After starring in the first two films in the “Fast and the Furious” franchise, Paul Walker ultimately decided not to appear in Part III. So why in heaven’s name, then, would he want to come back for Part IV?
“A lot of money,” Walker laughed on the set of his new film “Bone Deep.”
Here’s the punchline: He’s actually only half kidding.
“I don’t know,” Walker added. “I thought it would be fun to go back and do it one more time to close it out.”
Whatever the reason Walker chose to return is almost irrelevant, of course, since his presence is sure to excite fans of the series regardless. But it’s not who’s in the film that fans will be talking about, thinks Walker, it’s who’s not.
“When I did the second one everyone said ‘What’s up with Vin [Diesel]? Why didn’t he come back for the second one?’ And then I didn’t do the third one everyone was ‘Why didn’t you do the third one?’” Walker said. “But now everyone is going to be ‘Where’s Tyrese [Gibson]?’ I fought for that, to have him on board and it just didn’t work out.”
Excited for “Fast and Furious,” the series’ fourth big-screen installment? Looking forward to more Walker & Diesel action? Sound off on your thoughts below.

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks principals today announced the formalization of their transition agreements as Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider depart to form their previously announced new motion pictures company in partnership with Reliance BIG Entertainment. David Geffen, who oversaw the transition for DreamWorks, will not be joining the new company.
As part of the separation agreement, the DreamWorks principals' new company will take the lead on a number of development projects, which Paramount will have the option to co-finance and co-distribute. The majority of existing DreamWorks staff is expected to be offered positions at the new company.
All other projects currently in development will remain at Paramount with the opportunity for the Reliance-backed venture to co-finance several projects to which Spielberg is attached. In addition, Spielberg will continue to produce the "Transformers" franchise for Paramount and will also collaborate on three other Paramount films including, When Worlds Collide.
Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures said, "We have had a great run with the DreamWorks team both creatively and financially. In particular, it has been a true honor working closely with a storyteller of Steven's talent and stature. We are also grateful to David and Stacey for their exceptional leadership, creative talent and many contributions to our partnership over the past few years. We look forward to building on our joint successes as Paramount plans for the future."
Spielberg added, "Brad is a friend and I am pleased to be able to continue to work with him and his team with whom we have shared many successes. We have enjoyed a productive creative and business collaboration with Brad, Paramount and Viacom over the past few years and are enthusiastic about extending the relationship for many years to come. And I have a very special thanks to David Geffen for his far reaching vision that has made it possible for me to steer this new course. His advice and wisdom have always been right on the money. He is a friend for life."
"We are grateful to Brad, Rob and the entire Paramount team for their generous support and constant creativity. We are very proud of the films we produced and marketed together. We're excited about this new venture which wouldn't have been possible without the business genius and loyalty of David Geffen," said Stacey Snider, Co-chairman and CEO of DreamWorks Studios.
Rob Moore, Vice Chairman Paramount Pictures added, "It has been rewarding to work with the DreamWorks team and I'm gratified we'll have the opportunity to continue to work together. We wish them the best as they launch their new venture." |

'Flash' Foe Ford Clears Up About Wipers |
Oct 5, 2008 |

In this weekend's well-meaning docudrama, Flash of Genius, Greg Kinnear portrays an inventor who struggled for years to sue car manufacturing behemoth Ford and get them to admit that they helped themselves to his patent on the intermittent windshield wiper. (Eugene reviewed it back at Telluride, and I basically agree with his assessment.)
Despite the real-life case being settled a couple of decades ago, Ford has taken this current opportunity to point out the factual inaccuracies in the movie that they've taken issue with, doing so in the form of this handy timeline, without causing any sort of formal stir, as covered in this accompanying text. Especially considering that the film's subject, Robert Kearns, passed away over three years ago, I doubt it would (and hope it won't) come to any sort of renewed head.
Maybe in thirty years or so, we'll get a movie about a blogger battling impossible odds to get all the facts straight on either side of a movie in which an inventor battled impossible odds to get just some facts straight. Now, to just work the word 'Genius' back into the title...

British Royal Teams Up With Scorsese |

British royal Sarah Ferguson has tried her hand at film making - producing a new movie about late monarch Queen Victoria. The Duchess of York teamed up with Martin Scorsese to produce The Young Victoria, which stars Emily Blunt as the royal in her younger years.
Gosford Park Oscar winner Julian Fellowes has written the screenplay and Jean-Marc Vallee will direct.
Ferguson explains her role to the New York Post, "I wrote the two historical novels on her (Queen Victoria's) life. Emily Blunt plays Victoria, Rupert Friend is Prince Albert, and there's Natasha Richardson and Jim Broadbent. They're editing it now."

Roger Ebert Talks to the Wachowskis |
Oct 5, 2008 |
Petes1234567 |

Somehow I missed this on Thursday, but apparently so did everyone else, since I didn't see it linked anywhere. Roger Ebert was hanging out at a post-production studio in Chicago, watching the restored new print of The Godfather, when he was unexpectedly joined by Larry and Andy Wachowski, the famously inaccessible duo behind The Matrix, Speed Racer, and (people forget) Bound. Afterward, he got a chance to chat with them -- not in a conventional interview setting, complete with a hovering publicist (the brothers don't do that, remember?), but over a beer.
Ebert was impressed with the "zillionaires": "Nice people. Friendly. No Hollywood attitude." He writes that "[t]he blogosphere paints them as mysterious recluses, which may add to the legend but doesn't match the reality." But their being nice and friendly doesn't make them any less mysterious and reclusive: I'd wager that Ebert only ran the piece because of their reputation for not giving interviews or talking to anyone in the press.
Anyway, it's really interesting to "hear" them speak, though they mostly talk about the difficulties of keeping a moving 35 mm shot in focus and the brilliance of Coppola's Godfather shot selection. It's funny how keeping silent for a while will make such brief, mundane snippets into objects of arcane fascination. (Though since I think the Wachowskis are pretty formidable visual artists themselves, I find their perspective on that sort of thing interesting in its own right.)
No photo, of course; all you get is that old shot of the two admiring a Matrix comic book.

Kirsten Dunst has turned her life around after a stint in rehab earlier this year, by ditching her showbiz lifestyle. The actress was treated for depression at Utah's Cirque Lodge in February. Eight months on, Dunst is happier, and has her career back on track.
She says, "Everybody in life goes through obstacles in different times of their life, and this year was my difficult time. It's part of life and it's just called growing up. What I have learned is if you make it out of this business and realise the whole bigger picture of it all, you are in a good spot. It's just seeing what is important and the bigger things in life."
And she is convinced swapping her Hollywood home for a new pad in New York has helped: "It's not healthy to live that kind of life. I don't live in the spotlight and I don't live my life in front of the paparazzi. I live very comfortably and quietly as possible

Guillermo del Toro on The Hobbit and Frankenstein |
Oct 5, 2008 |
SexiVixxEN |
Other |
The filmmaker formally known as Guillermo del Toro, now referred to ubiquitously as Guillermo "I'm making The Motherf****** 'Hobbit'" del Toro, appeared tonight at the Director's Guild of America in midtown Manhattan as part of The New Yorker Festival series of talks. During the conversation with New Yorker staff writer Daniel Zalewski, the director of such modern genre masterpieces as Pan's Labyrinth and the "Hellboy" series talked up some of his future projects, including the aforementioned two-film Tolkien adaptation as well as a new version of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein."
Currently at the beginning of pre-production on The Hobbit, del Toro discussed his process of gathering ideas, or "feeding his brain," in order to conceptualize his own vision of Middle Earth unique from where Peter Jackson went in his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy…
"I find you have to discipline yourself to write in the morning, and then watch and read in the afternoons stuff that seems relevant, even in a tangential way. For example, reading or watching World War I documentaries or books that I think inform 'The Hobbit,' strangely enough, because I believe it is a book born out of Tolkien's generation's experience with World War I and the disappointment of being in that field and seeing all those values kind of collapse. I think it's a turning point that you need to familiarize yourself with. I'm starting. Peter Jackson is such a fan of that historical moment and obsessive collector of World War I memorabilia, and he owns several genuine, life-size working reproductions of planes, tanks, cannons, ships! He has the perfect obsessive reproductions of uniforms of that time for armies of about 120 soldiers... each. I asked him which books he recommended… because I wouldn't be watching 'Krull' or 'The Dark Crystal,' I need to find my OWN way into the story. That's the same way I did 'Pan's Labyrinth' or 'Devil's Backbone,' by watching stuff you wouldn't think about.
"All my life I've been fascinated by dragons. I was born under the Chinese sign of The Dragon. All my life I'm collecting dragons. It's such a powerful symbol, and in the context of 'The Hobbit' it is used to cast its shadow through the entire narrative. Essentially, Smaug represents so many things: greed, pride… he's 'the Magnificent,' after all. The way his shadow is cast in the narrative you cannot then show it and have it be one thing, he has to be the embodiment of all those things. He's one of the few dragons that will have enormous scenes with lines. He has some of the most beautiful dialogues in those scenes! The design, I'm pretty sure that will be the last design we will sign off on, and the first design we have attempted. It is certainly a matter of turning every stone before figuring out what he looks like, because what he looks like will tell you what he is."
After he completes his work on the two "Hobbit" films in 2012, the prodigiously optimistic del Toro has a whole slew of projects to keep him occupied until 2017, including a new version of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, his long-delayed Lovecraft adaptation At the Mountains of Madness, a just-announced trilogy of vampire novels (the first of which he claims is already written), and his own version of Frankenstein.
Del Toro is an acknowledged fan of "Frankenstein." He has busts of Boris Karloff as the monster in his house. One of his biggest filmic influences, the 1973 Spanish film The Spirit of the Beehive, revolves around a showing of the classic Universal Frankenstein. He has raved about Bernie Wrightson's illustrated version and the original Frank Darabont script eventually filmed as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein by Kenneth Branagh in '94 and all-but-disowned by Darabont. Del Toro's version, however, sounds decidedly different…
"I'm not doing 'Mary Shelly's Frankenstein.' I'm doing an adventure story that involves the creature. I cannot say much, but it's not the central creation story, I'm not worried about that. The fact is I've been dreaming of doing a 'Frankenstein' movie since I was a child. The one thing I can promise is, compared to Kenneth Branagh, I will not appear shirtless in the movie!"
When pressed by a fan during the Q & A regarding the Wargs' appearance in The Hobbit, del Toro seemed like a child dying to spill the big secret he has but forcing himself to show restraint, joking that "Warner Brothers has a sniper right here in the theater."
"There will be different sensibilities involved in this movie than there were in the original trilogy. First of all, because we have the travelogues in 'The Hobbit' which goes to places and variations on races that were not addressed in the trilogy. My belief on the 'Wargs' issue is that the classical incarnation of the demonic wolf in Nordic mythology is not a hyena-shaped creature. It is a wolf. The archetype is a wolf, so we're going to go back to the slender, archetypical wolf that is, I think, the inspiration for Tolkien. Listen… if we were having a drink two years from now I would spill the beans, because I'm a pretty easy guy about spilling the beans, but I can't in this instance I can't because it's three years from now... believe me, I am jumping up-and-down inside this fat body!"

Official Dracula 2 |

It looks like vampire-defining author Bram Stoker is pulling a Tupac, seeing his material released long after his demise.
The material in question is a follow-up to his famous bloodsucker book DRACULA, a "family authorized sequel" titled THE UN-DEAD. The story will reportedly take place in London years after the events of the first novel, and finds the Dracula-killing heroes being stalked by a new threat.
The book, to be published late next year, comes from Stoker's great-grandnephew (which seems a fairly tenuous family connection) Dacre Stoker, and Dracula historian Ian Holt. The story is an expansion of Bram Stoker's original notes for DRACULA, and is described as "a virtually seamless continuation of the original."
Needless to say, a movie adaptation is already in the works, with Jan de Bont (TWISTER, SPEED) producing. Filming is expected to begin before the book even hits shelves.

Tyler Perry unveils new studio in Atlanta |

Tyler Perry unveiled a new multimillion-dollar TV and film studio Saturday on 30 acres in southwest Atlanta.
His renewed commitment to the city came after he once flirted with departing. Perry said he had considered leaving Atlanta for good after neighbors complained about noise and traffic at his old studio in a neighborhood close to downtown.
"Even though it was a studio there for 15 years, there was a lot of resistance in everything I was doing," Perry said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press earlier in the week. "I was thinking about leaving at one point, but this is home for me."
His new Tyler Perry Studios contains more than 200,000 square feet of studio and office space in an area that once housed Delta Air Lines' finance, reservation and computer center. It was vacant when Perry found it.
The guest list included Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, Oprah Winfrey, Forest Whitaker, Hank Aaron and Whitney Houston. R&B singer Mary J. Blige was to perform.
Perry, 39, said the studio features five sound stages that will be named after Quincy Jones, Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee and Cicely Tyson with one still unnamed. He will shoot his TBS sitcoms "House of Payne" and "Meet the Browns" along with other film projects at the studio.
Perry said he knew the new location would be an improvement. His old building was on property zoned commercial, but the street next to it is residential.
"I knew spiritually I was in the wrong place," said Perry, whose projects include "Tyler Perry's the Family That Preys."
"You can never be upset with the people who forced you into your dream or up higher," he said. "They forced me out into a higher situation. It's worked out much better for me."
Perry drew criticism from the Writers Guild of America, West, after Perry fired four writers from "House of Payne" earlier in the week. A guild spokeswoman said in an e-mail Saturday that the four, along with supporters, planned to picket Sunday morning at Perry's Atlanta home.

Sacha Baron Cohen Involved In Fourth Fashion Fracas |

Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen was ejected from a catwalk show during Paris Fashion Week in France on Friday, after climbing on stage and attempting to slip a note to the models. The British funnyman is currently filming scenes for his new movie Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt.
Dressed as his camp alter-ego Bruno, he attempted to carry out his latest stunt at the JC De Castebajac show— scenes which are suspected to feature in his forthcoming comedy.
But he suffered a small setback when the models and audience ignored his presence and continued despite the disturbance.
The star was promptly ejected by security staff in what is his fourth attempt to disrupt a fashion show.
Dressed as Bruno, Cohen twice crashed shows at Madrid Fashion Week in Spain and was also thrown out of a show in Milan, Italy last week after storming the runway and strutting along the catwalk— prompting organizers to call the police.
Cohen's latest film is being shot in a similar documentary style to his 2006 hit Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

An Asian actress has hanged herself due to rumours about her involvement in another actor's suicide earlier this year, it has been claimed.
Choi Jin-sil, 39, known as Korea's answer to Meg Ryan, took her life after becoming agitated over web reports that she drove Ahn Jee-hwan to his death last month as he could not pay back money he owed her.
She was found in the bathroom of her home in Seoul, South Korea, hanging from a rope made out of bandages.
There was no suicide note at the scene, but Choi sent a number of text messages to her makeup assistant asking her to "take care of [my] children" no matter what.
A moment of silence was held at the opening ceremony of the Pusan International Film Festival as a mark of respect for Choi.

Ridley Scott encourages actor feedback |

Veteran director Ridley Scott has revealed that he encourages actors to challenge him on movie sets.
The British filmmaker, who worked with Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Strong on forthcoming movie Body Of Lies, admitted that some cast members need more encouragement than others when it comes to sharing their ideas.
"What I've found is you can't let anything go by - you have to speak," Scott, 70, told the Boston Globe. "I love to encourage actors to come forward with suggestions so it's not me saying, 'This is what it is and that's what you're going to do!' Everything's an evolution.
"So they're encouraged - well, not Russell and Leo, they're not going to be shy in coming forward, believe me! - but I mean, if I've got someone coming in new, like Mark Strong, I hadn't worked with him before and I really enjoyed that experience, so I liked to include him in the process. Everything, right down to how he looks. What do you think, what do you think, what do you think?"

Former Will & Grace co-stars Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes are set to star in a spin-off of the hit comedy. The pair will reprise their camp double-act in "Karen & Jack," which is currently in development at network NBC.
According to sources, Hayes was keen on a spin-off soon after "Will & Grace" ended in 2006 - but was put off by the failure of Matt LeBlanc's Friends follow-up Joey. Plans were then derailed when Mullally landed a talk show - but that flopped, throwing the pair back together again.
The insider tells the National Enquirer, "They feel there is still a lot of life left in their characters and a lot of comic possibilities."
If a pilot episode is successful, "Karen & Jack" could be on the air in the next autumn.

Holmes, from Northern Ireland, mused, "Hayek doesn't sound very Mexican."

She smiled and then leaned in to clarify her answer, saying slowly, "I am Lebanese."

Captain America Will Fight Nazis |

We’ve just updated our Upcoming Movies section with a plot synopsis for The First Avenger: Captain America, as provided by Production Weekly. The synopsis reveals some interesting things about Marvel’s plans for Cap. It looks like the movie will be a period piece, not a modern updating of Captain America’s origins. Or at the very least, we’re going to spend a significant amount of time watching Steve Rogers before and during World War II.
Full plot breakdown: Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe,Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy's earnest plea,General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment... Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the Super-Solider Serum and bombarded by "vita-rays." Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later,he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and battle savvy, Captain America has continued hiswar against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and as leader of the Avengers.
Doing it as a period piece sort of makes sense, when you consider the odd “First Avenger” title and the fact that the actual The Avengers team-up movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters only a couple of months after Captain America’s solo movie debuts. The First Avenger hits theaters on May 6th, while The Avengers arrives on July 15th. |

Review: Rachel Getting Married |

(We're re-posting our review of Rachel Getting Married from the Toronto International Film Festival to coincide with the film's theatrical release this weekend)
By: James Rocchi
Rachel Getting Married is a terse, smart, funny and tough family drama about forgiveness and failure written by Jenny Lumet; it's also a loose, smart, broad and bright film about family and love directed by Jonathan Demme. When these two things are in sync, the end result is something truly impressive – a moving story that appeals to your heart and soul without insulting your intelligence, a film full of big scenes that never stoops to the most obvious possible iteration of those big scenes, a movie loaded with great and sincere performances from the top down. When the two parts of Rachel Getting Married fall out of synch – as they do, most notably, in the last third of the film during Demme's raucous, joyous post-wedding reception – it's less catastrophic than it is curious, and the final film is still very much worth watching.
Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt) is getting married; her little sister Kym (Anne Hathaway) is coming for the big event ... which involves getting picked up from her most recent stay at a rehab clinic. A cynic could look at Hathaway's part in Rachel Getting Married and paraphrase Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder: Always go full rehab. And while it's true that the Academy and critics tend to reward gritty, hyperbolic portraits of drug-addiction's misery, the fact is that Hathaway's Kym is not quite as simple as that. Kym knows all the things she's done wrong; she also knows she'll keep doing some of them. Immediately, in the car, the lines of battle are drawn, with Kym going on the offense as part of her defense mechanisms, asking her dad (Bill Irwin) and step-mother (Anna Deavere Smith) about how Rachel's holding up: "Are all of her latent food issues coming up? Is she still hoarding Snickers and Cool Whip under the bed?" Soon, Kym's plunged into the thick of the preparations for Rachel's wedding, responding to the chaos by adding to it. ...
Shot with hand-held cameras, Rachel Getting Married brings us into the heart of a family, but, to screenwriter Lumet's credit, never over-explains itself or says everything out loud. In the rehearsal dinner, Kym offers a toast to Rachel and her fiancée Sydney (Tunde Adebimpe) that starts as an attention-begging bit of showboating ("I'm Shiva the destroyer, and I am your harbinger of doom for the evening ...") and continues as Kym flays herself to the bone in front of the crowd, her self-serving self-loathing punctuated by asides of nervous laughter as if she were terrified of silence. Hathaway may be best-known for her porcelain good looks, but here she digs in to a character, hard enough to show bruises, and she does not make Kym 'sympathetic' so much as she builds Kym into a person who earns our sympathy.
But Rachel Getting Married is hardly a one-woman show; Bill Irwin has a few great moments as Kym and Rachel's father; DeWitt manages to capture both sibling rivalry and sisterly compassion, petty jealousy and rough-hewn forgiveness; as Kym's mother, Debra Winger, much like Mary Tyler Moore in Ordinary People, plays a person both cut off from her feelings and captured in the grip of them. On the groom's side, Adabimpe is stalwart as Sidney, while Mather Zickel gives a funny, charming, loose performance as best man Kieran, who has more in common with Kym than just a big role in the ceremony.
Lumet's script is, perhaps, the best thing about Rachel Getting Married; many things are left unsaid, many things are unexplained, and many things are said and explained through the natural ebb and flow of the conversation. Lumet has an ear for dialogue, but she also has an eye for detail, like when Kym steps into "her" room at the family's house; it's preserved as if in amber, still and airless and perfect and dead. Lumet also captures the jumbled, joyous chaos of a modern wedding -- the weird mix of territorial squabbles over everything from seating charts to roles in the bridal party and warm, loving, celebration. And as we go from rehearsal to reception, difficulty to disaster, we learn how much Kym truly has to atone for, and Hathaway, Demme and Lumet bring to life someone who has, through her own fault, earned a crushing sorrow that she will feel every day of her life: Kym notes, of her gravest error, how "I can live with it, but I can't forgive myself ..."; Hathaway makes us believe it. At the same time, Rachel Getting Married is very funny -- from quick-cut gags to smart character-driven asides to a character's explosion of annoyance late in the film that may echo the audience's feelings about one of the film's devices.
Director Demme has spent the past few years making glossy entertainments (The Trouble with Charlie, The Manchurian Candidate) and digital documentaries (Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains, Neil Young: Heart of Gold). Rachel Getting Married offers him a chance to get back to his roots while still displaying all the talent and craft that moved him forward; the decision to shoot the film, in his words, "like the most beautiful home movie ever made," does a lot to help build the intimate, inside mood of the film. If one thing seems at odds with the small-scale, carefully-crafted tone of Lumet's script, it's the excess and enthusiasm that Demme brings to the closing reception scenes.
I can accept that Rachel and Sidney's wedding is full of talented friends and, thanks to Sidney's career in the industry, live music; when Robyn Hitchcock and Sister Carol perform at the reception, I found myself distracted, Demme's desire to include his talented friends undercutting the talent he had shown in telling the story. Even with that minor moment of excessive exuberance -- and, really, who among us hasn't been inspired to an excess of exuberance at a wedding? -- Rachel Getting Married is a rich, real and smart drama, one that doesn't just mark the arrival of an exciting new screenwriter; Rachel Getting Married may wind up being the film that took Anne Hathaway from being a name-brand movie star to being recognized as a talented, committed and gifted actress. |

Superman Sequel May Start Shooting Next Year |

Even though Kevin Spacey has spent most of the past few years in London, managing the Old Vic theater, he's contractually obligated to make at least one more movie-- the Superman Returns sequel that is seemingly constantly on the brink of being made. If a recent article about Spacey in London's Independent newspaper is to be believed, he may be leaving London for a L.A. soundstage sooner than anyone expected.
Soon after quoting Spacey on his lack of love for movies these days, the article says "That may not go down so well with the producers of the follow-up to Superman Returns, who will be paying him big bucks to reprise his role as Lex Luthor next year. " Next year? When we don't even know if Bryan Singer will be able to get the thing made? It's entirely possible the Independent has their facts, wrong-- they're a London newspaper, after all, not a trade publication--but maybe Spacey slipped them some info the rest of us haven't heard about yet. If this tidbit gets reported enough there may have to be some official statements either confirming or denying; until then, it'll just be a fun rumor to debate. |

Christopher Nolan Signed For Batman 3? |

Despite rumors to the contrary, it looks like Christopher Nolan may now indeed be signed to direct a sequel to The Dark Knight. The newest edition of Production Weekly went out this morning, and they list Nolan as the official director of Batman 3, along with Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman in the cast.
They further confirm some of the rumors which were swirling around earlier this week, listing Batman 3 as slated to go into pre-production in February of 2009. On Wednesday IESB.net attempted to debunk the rumors of the film’s imminent pre-production when they were told by a WB exec that the film “is not in pre-production and is not getting ready to shoot”. That’s not necessarily wrong. It’s not in pre-production and it’s not getting ready to shoot… right now. It will however be in pre-production this coming February.
Production Weekly is not normally prone to exaggeration. In theory, they get all of their information directly from official sources and not internet rumors. Still, it’s somewhat surprising that Warner Bros. would give that information to Production Weekly before they’re able to make a big, splashy announcement themselves. This Batman franchise is sort of a big deal after all. |

Daniel Craig has denied he is a cursed James Bond, despite a succession of accidents suffered by cast and crew during the filming of his latest 007 adventure. Craig, 40, needed eight stitches in a face wound and lost a fingertip while performing his own stunts for Quantum of Solace. Two stuntmen were also injured, one seriously, when a car chase scene went wrong during filming in Italy. But Craig has dismissed any notion of a Bond curse. "The thing about the curse of Bond is that it's offensive," says Craig. "There's a risk to everything we do and we have literally the best people in the world who do this and every precaution is taken to minimise the risk, but there is a risk. The seriously injured stuntman, Aris Comninos, was airlifted to hospital and is making a good recovery. He was in a very bad way. We had a helicopter standing by with paramedics because that's the way it works every time we do a sequence like that. And they literally saved his life. But taking my finger as part of a 'curse' - that's offensive. This is what we do, this is what happens, but it gets magnified and completely taken out of context |

Some sanity after the hysteria about Branagh directing Thor |

As impressive as Branagh's backlog of movies is, there's not a hell of a lot in there that would recommend him for the helm of a big budget superhero adventure about a hammer wielding Norse god. Then again, who'd have imagined that Peter (Brain Dead) Jackson was capable of bringing The Lord of the Rings so successfully to the big screen?
When all is said and done Branagh's lack of experience with the superhero genre is outweighed by the qualities that he would bring to this project, namely intelligence, proven directing skill and an understanding of the importance of character over special-effects. And perhaps most important of all, he will bring a fresh perspective to a genre that all too easily succumbs to the cookie cutter approach to story telling. |

"Chihuahua" has paws on the box-office prize |

It's looking like a dog of a weekend at the box office. Disney's dog, to be exact, as the Burbank studio unspools its PG comedy "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" amid expectations that the live-action with talking dogs feature could fetch up to $30 million during its opening weekend.
The film's canines are voiced by Drew Barrymore, Jamie Lee Curtis, Andy Garcia and George Lopez.
Family patrons form the target audience, but Disney executives hope the young-at-heart crowd also will come along for the four-legged romp.
"In all the screenings we've done, we have gotten nothing but wonderful marks from all the audiences who were on hand," Disney distribution president Chuck Viane said. "So there's no question that this is a commercial, family film, but I believe we can expand on that audience."
With "Chihuahua" sure to bow at No. 1, last weekend's top dog -- DreamWorks/Paramount's "Eagle Eye" -- could grab second place, if the Shia LaBeouf/Michelle Monaghan thriller rings up half its $29.2 million opening gross during its sophomore session.
But Sony's young-skewing PG-13 comedy "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" also will compete for the silver-medal position. The musically driven romantic comedy starring Michael Cera ("Superbad") and Kat Dennings ("The 40-Year-Old Virgin") appears safe to open in the teen millions, and a particularly robust weekend could help it soar a bit higher than "Eagle."
Whatever the precise pecking order of the top films, their combined grosses should power the industry to a second consecutive year-over-year weekend uptick after a sluggish start to the fall box-office season. Less than $85 million was registered during the comparable year-ago frame, whose biggest opener was the disappointing $14 million bow by a remake of "The Heartbreak Kid."
This weekend's four other wide openers look likely to max out in the upper single-digit millions.
Miramax's "Blindness" -- starring Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo and Gael Garcia Bernal and directed by Fernando Meirelles -- is getting a wide bow, but the atmospheric thriller likely will need positive word-of-mouth from its first frame to fuel a leggy run toward commercial success. MGM and After Dark's R-rated comedy "How to Lose Friends & Alienate People," starring Simon Pegg ("Hot Fuzz"), should skew a bit older than "Playlist" and gross much lower.
Vivendi's political spoof "An American Carol" skewers liberal sensitivities and is likely to play best with even older audiences. "Carol" represents the first film release for Vivendi, whose next scheduled film is the Mariah Carey-starring "Tennessee" in December.
Spyglass Entertainment's Universal-distributed drama "Flash of Genius" stars Greg Kinnear but has barely registered in prerelease tracking surveys. Based on the true story of Robert Kearns, inventor of the intermittent windshield wiper, "Genius"might find its true road to decent returns in the DVD market.
Universal this weekend also will offer 750 sneak previews of its October 10 pigskin film "The Express," starring Dennis Quaid and Rob Brown. |

Kevin Farley Says 'An American Carol' Urges Support For The Troops And Their Mission |
Oct 4, 2008 |

'Appeasement leads to more wars,' actor says of the right-wing comedy's message.
Kevin Farley insists that his new movie, "An American Carol," is "not as controversial as people want to make it out to be." Not controversial, he says, because the viewpoints exposed in the film — a right-wing polemic written and directed by spoof-comedy legend David Zucker, in which Farley stars as the Michael Moore-ish filmmaker Michael Malone — are more common and widespread than most people realize.
But what exactly are those viewpoints? To hear some dismissive reporters and early viewers tell it, it's that dissent can be unpatriotic, that Moore and, really, by extension, Democrats, are sometimes bad Americans and that criticism of the government during wartime will only embolden our enemies.
As proof, most early reviews point to a scene in which the ghost of George Washington (played by Jon Voight) takes Malone to the ruins of the World Trade Center at Ground Zero to lecture him on the freedom of speech, "which you abuse," Washington tells him. When Malone fires back that he's just making movies, Washington wonders, "Is that what you plan to say on Judgment Day?"
Is the movie really saying that freedom of speech can be abused? That there's some connection between that and the attacks of 9/11?
No, not at all — although kinda, Farley hedged.
"It's a point in the movie where it's like the end of 'A Christmas Story,' where it always gets really serious with the angel of death. So we have Jon Voight, who says freedom of speech is something we should not abuse. We really try to drive the point home. It's a pretty heavy-handed scene," Farley said, explaining why they have the scene at the WTC site. "[That location was chosen] because basically it had the biggest impact. We wanted to have a big impact about the points of the movie.
"Before 9/11, [David Zucker] was a Democrat, and I think that he switched over after 9/11 because of how he felt they viewed it," Farley continued. "Rather than saying, 'We caused 9/11,' Republicans are saying, 'How can we prevent 9/11 from happening again?' So I think [that scene] is about supporting the troops and supporting their mission. We make a clear point we are supporting [both]. We too often make a distinction between supporting the troops and supporting what they are doing. [The film says] that appeasement leads to more wars. We should celebrate our troops and their mission.
"There's been a lot of movies that have come out of Hollywood that haven't said that," he said. "And we are the first ones that do."
"An American Carol" opened Friday (October 3).

Robert Downey Jr. Doesn't Understand Batman |

The decades-long battle between DC Comics and Marvel Comics continued this week as Robert Downey Jr. (aka Iron Man) slammed box-office hit Batman.
"Didn't get it, still can't tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy. I'm like, 'I get it. This is so high brow and so f***ing smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.' You know what? F*** DC Comics. That's all I have to say and that's where I'm really coming from."
Marvel fans have always argued that the publisher's characters – Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and Spider Man among them, are more flawed, complex and nuanced than DC archetypes Batman, Superman and Wonderwoman. However, now it seems that Downey Jr. is complaining Batman is too complex.
His criticisms should be taken with a healthy dose of salt. Case in point: despite a superhero-worthy performance in this summer's blockbuster, Iron Man, rival hit Batman became the second-highest grossing U.S. movie of all time, while Iron Man sits in twenty-first place.
The real winner in the battle for our hearts and wallets? In the eleven years since its release, not a single movie has managed to top the good ship Titanic's profits, proving once again that the biggest superhero of all time is love, sweet sweet love. |

Following recent reports Sony Pictures are planning to shoot a fourth instalment of the hugely popular superhero franchise, Kirsten was asked if she would be part of the project. She replied: "I'm in."

Tom Arnold delivered a speech for Arnold Schwarzenegger when the California governor could not make an appearance.
According to Arnold, Schwarzenegger was stuck in the Middle East and was unable to reach a Chamber of Commerce function in which he was scheduled to speak before 60,000 people.
Instead, the governor asked his True Lies co-star to fill in for him.
"[Schwarzenegger] said, 'The speech is already written, you just have to go up there and say the words.'
"But I wanted to make it a bit more 'me' and I was thinking about gay marriage, which is a hot button subject, as it turns out.
"So I said, "I'll be honest. I'm for it. Even if you don't like gay people. You should vote for this. Marriage isn't that great. If we have to get married - why shouldn't they?" |

Hollywood’s promising you more superheroes, more crossovers, bigger films - but will they be any goo |

It wasn’t so long ago when Hollywood was collectively freaking out, on a daily basis, about the “shrinking theatrical window” and the doomsday-like predictions of “day-and-date” movie distribution. Now that 2008 has seen the revitalizing effects of a few theatrical blockbusters - specifically in Iron Man and The Dark Knight - it looks like Hollywood will instead focus on dragging us back into the multiplexes after all.
But I’d argue that the success of both films owe as much to a stronger dedication to story and character as they do for their purely visual and aesthetic treats. And I wonder, as I read about recent trends designed to Make! The Movies! Into Events! Again!!, whether future efforts will simply throw story, character and true narrative movie-making back under the bus again.
The surge in recent years of filmmakers utilizing the IMAX format is pretty clear proof of Hollywood’s effort to leverage cinematic content in a way that consumers can’t replicate on their puny 50″ plasma TVs at home. But as we prepare for the sensory bludgeoning that will result from giving Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen the IMAX treatment, we have to wonder how much of a good thing we deserve to have. Bay’s action scenes, often incomprehensibly shot and bulldozingly edited, can be overwhelming in the multiplex. Once they’ve been exploded (awesomely!) to IMAX-sized dimensions, can there be any doubt that widespread brain trauma and suicide will follow?
I’m kidding - sort of - but I do believe that blockbuster entertainment needs more than gorgeous explosions and flurrying, swirling cameras to be successful. Simply tossing masturbation humor and slow-motion shots of the American flag onto an IMAX screen does not, I’d suggest, encourage a newfound adoration of the Big Screen Arts.
In their relentless pursuit of our precious dollars, Hollywood will also continue to create (WARNING: MARKETING BUZZ-PHRASE APPROACHING) entertainment synergies between multiple (WARNING: HERE’S ANOTHER ONE) audience touch points. One thing that means for Joe Q. Moviegoer is that he can expect to see more movies based on his favorite comic books and video games - and, in some cases, the other way around.

Jan De Bont to helm DRACULA: THE UN-DEAD |

Bram Stoker’s great grand-nephew Dacre Stoker and award winning historian Ian Holt have teamed together on a sequel to the classic original 1897 vampire novel DRACULA, which has just been picked up for release in the U.S. next October.
Shock Till You Drop also report that a film adaptation is on the cards with SPEED director Jan De Bont expected to shoot the movie next summer from a script by co-author Ian Holt and first time studio scribe Alexander Galant.
Our story,” Stoker said, “includes characters and plot threads that had been excised by the publisher from the original printing over a century ago.”
The title refers to the original 1897 Stoker novel which was to be called THE UN-DEAD until just a few weeks before publication when Stoker became obsessed with the Romanian name Dracul, and changed the title of his book accordingly.
Set in London, 1912, the sequel will follow the heroes who defeated DRACULA from the original tale being stalked by a mysterious enemy. The infamous characters of Jack The Ripper and Madame Bathory could also make an appearance as both were cut out of Stoker’s original novel.
Mark me down as being more excited for the book rather than the film. I’ve read DRACULA three times, I love the novel and I’m intrigued to see what they have gathered from Stoker’s original writings to put into this sequel. And well if nothing else, the film will at least attempt to be something new and not the same old adaptation we have seen at least a hundred times by now.
Though the fact that director Jan De Bont’s only previous horror was 1999’s THE HAUNTING, I’m reserving my judgement on whether he is the right man for this.
Alex Proyas’ DRACULA: YEAR ONE, I have more hope in.
